Ted Ligety earns his first World Cup victory of season

    January 29, 2010 |

Ted American Ted Ligety claimed his first World Cup victory of the season today, winning the giant slalom for the third consecutive year on Slovenia’s Pokoren 3 course.

The Utah native finished in a combined time of 2 minutes, 22.02 seconds to claim his fifth World Cup career victory.

“I’ve always had a good feeling on this hill,” Ligety told the Associated Press. “I feel like I am always doing better toward the end of the season.”

The victory pushes Ligety past Austria’s Benjamin Raich for the overall lead in the World Cup point standings. Ligety will look to extend his lead further by winning another giant slalom event on Saturday.

Ligety, the defending Olympic gold medalist in the men’s combined, is among the favorites to win gold in the giant slalom during next month’s Winter Olympics.

“I have a lot of confidence now,” he said. “But it’s super hard in this sport to repeat your success and have good race after good race.”
